African Languages at Black Star Academy
For generations, African languages have been silenced, shamed, and sidelined.
Many from our elder generation from the continent, will recall the painful memories of being punished — even beaten — for speaking their mother tongues in school. Across the continent, our languages were labeled as primitive, unfit, or reduced to the word “vernacular”, as if they were lesser than .
Meanwhile, everywhere else in the world, children learn in the languages of their nations. Their textbooks, stories, and songs reflect their tongues, their worldview, and their soul. But in Africa — a continent rich with over 2,000 languages — the only book consistently translated and mass-printed was the Bible.
That was by design.
At Black Star Academy, we say: No more.
We believe our languages are sacred vessels of knowledge, history, and healing. They carry ancestral memory. They encode identity, land, and belonging. And we are committed to restoring dignity to African languages by promoting and teaching them proudly.

✨ What We Offer
We are thrilled to begin this journey with two widely spoken and powerful African languages:
Kiswahili – Spoken across East and Central Africa, it is a language of trade, resistance, and pan-African connection.
Shona – One of the most spoken languages in Southern Africa, rooted deeply in Zimbabwean culture and spirituality.
Our classes are open to all ages — children, youth, and adults — and are held online to accommodate our global African family. Each session is designed to be interactive, empowering, and culturally grounded.
We are working tirelessly to expand our language offerings and are actively seeking volunteer teachers for other African languages — whether it's Yoruba, Lingala, Zulu, Wolof, Amharic, Ewe, or beyond.
