Volunteer Questions
What's the minimum time I can volunteer a week?
We are asking for a minimum commitment of at least 2 hours per week, although we will consider all applications.
What's the process for volunteering?
What training is provided?
We are in the process of putting together a comprehensive volunteer training and support progamme.
Who is BlackStarAcademy targeted towards?
BSA has been created to provide a solution to a speccific problem in the Black community. Black and Black Biracial Children are the target demographic and the curriculum reflects that.
Can I support financially without volunteering?
Short answer YES. Long answer is on the way!
I'm not based in the UK, can I still volunteer?
Yes, we welcome volunteers from across the diaspora. Just be mindful of the timing difference.
Student & Parent Questions
When does enrolment start?
Enrolment for the 25/26 school year starts now. You can enrol now. We currently have a Summer coding club, Language courses. Core curriculum will start the second week of September 26.
Are there any virtual days pre enrolment?
Yes, check the website for updates. We are planning a virtual open day in August (date to be confirmed)
Is there a maximum number of children
We currently have no limits on the numbers of students per family, however if in the case of oversubscription we may limit the numbers per household to ensure fairness for all.
Is BlackStarAcademy really FREE?
Yes, all our teachers, teaching assistants, tutors, mentors and behind the scene volunteers are unpaid and so our costs are minimal.
However one of key philosophies is the concept of GivingBlack. Therefore as we are ambassadors raising awareness and funds for the ongoing genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo, we are suggesting a donation of £15 per student per term [ £5p/m or £1.25p/w]
Core curriculum teaching for 8-16 year olds will ALWAYS be free at BSA. However some of our additional offerings - Language Courses etc will have a minimal fee to allow us to support vulnerable children in Congo.
Can children outside of the UK enrol for BSA?
Yes, we welcome Black children from across the diaspora.
However note the following:
Time Difference - lessons run from 10:00 - 13:00BST
Language - All classes will be taught in English or German.
What non academic programmes are available?

Coding Club
What safeguarding has been put in place for online learning?
We are currently unfunded and we are likely to remain so unless we can access no strings attached funding.
How do BSA accommodate children with differing learning styles?
What time do the sessions run?
School Hours are 10am to Ipm.
Enrichment Hours are 1.30pm - 3.30pm
How much additional work will be required outside of the lessons on Saturday
Yes, we welcome Black children from across the diaspora.

Are all the teachers qualified?
Our team of teaching volunteers is a mix of qualified teachers, currently teaching and retired
Our volunteer teaching team is a diverse range of qualified teachers and passionate subject matter experts,
Dependant on volunteers the aim is to have a TA for every 5 children.
Will there be programmes available outside of the school year?
That is definitely our aim but this is wholly dependant on volunteer commitment and availability.
We are hoping to put together a skeleton programme for August 2025

We are currently unfunded and we are likely to remain so unless we can access no strings attached funding.
